How to Avoid Making Art (Or Anything Else You Enjoy)
I'm 49 male single no kids. I was married once for 2 years and had many long term relationships over the years. My friends have been going nuts with their kids or getting divorced the past few years, while I enjoy my freedom and solitude I've never considered myself a loner and I'm very nice to people. As I get older I appreciate my time more than ever. Unfortunate that not everyone can get this in life.
I do have a room mate and we both kinda do the same thing. It's really nice! This is the very first article I've ever read by a mental health professional regarding the subject. I am never more content or happy than when I have several days in a row of solitude. I get so much done, there's no drama, I can indulge myself instead of catering to other's seemingly constant needs.
There are so many people in my life that do not understand this virtually everyone. They get anxious if they can't be in contact round the clock. I feel like needy types are much more unhealthy than those of us who like their own company and seek regular solitude. Thanks to all of you for sharing. Many of us have our very own reasons for seeking solitude.

The world we live in will not give us a quiet place to be. We need to find it for ourselves. My "Quietude" gives my mind the space I need to interact with myself and with others. It calms my nerves, and staves off headaches. It has caused me to be aware of my own needs, as well as the needs of others.
When my children were small, someone told me that if we kept on giving, and giving without refilling, soon we would be empty, and unable to help the ones we want to help. Truer words were never spoken. Alone and lonely. Very different. My Quietude causes me to be better for those I love. Thank you for your article.
